WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Washington Area Fuel Fund (WAFF), Washington Gas’s signature philanthropic program, assisted more than 8,200 area residents in 2009, disbursing over $888,000 to help pay for winter heating bills. Administered by The Salvation Army, WAFF pays for all types of fuel used as the primary heating source. Because Washington Gas pays the fund’s administrative fees, 100% of the money donated to WAFF goes to helping area families. This year’s demand for aid was higher than usual, setting a new record for assistance provided.

“This year, WAFF applicants had very high past-due amounts on their utility bills, resulting in the highest average bill payment amount of any year to date,” said The Salvation Army Commander Steve Morris. “Layoffs, ongoing unemployment and overall effects of the economic downturn all contributed to high past-due bills this year. WAFF assistance has provided a valuable safety net for those in critical need.”

To bring greater awareness to WAFF and the needs of area families, Washington Gas recently launched a dedicated WAFF Web site at In addition to offering a number of donation options, the site includes information on how to get help if your family is having difficulty with heating costs, as well as information on how you can help keep a family in need warm this winter.

“The development of the new WAFF Web site represents Washington Gas's continued commitment to working with our communities and with charitable organizations to make a significant difference in the lives of those we serve,” said James H. DeGraffenreidt, Chairman and CEO of Washington Gas. “For more than 25 years, the successful alliance between The Salvation Army and Washington Gas has enabled WAFF to help hundreds of thousands of area residents.”

Since its inception in 1983, WAFF has disbursed more than $19.5 million, which has helped more than 232,000 people.
